CHAPTER 8

“Hey. Is everything okay?” Morgan asked at 8:15, when Adler called her back. “I thought we were going to FaceTime at eight. Work?”

“Not exactly,” Adler replied. “Can we just talk on the phone tonight?”

Morgan could detect something in Adler’s tone that normally wasn’t present in their conversations about their respective days, friends, and significant others in Adler’s situation. She sat on the end of the bed, clutching a pair of shorts in one hand and her phone in the other.

“What’s going on?” she asked, stuffing the shorts into her pack.

“I wanted to apologize for being late. I didn’t plan on messing this up again,” Adler said.

“Addie, what are you talking about?” Morgan chuckled lightly. “It’s a phone call. I get that you’re busy. You always let me know when you can or can’t talk.”

“How is it that you understand how busy I am and that sometimes I might be late, but Brad doesn’t?”

Morgan knew then what was going on. Brad must have made another comment about Adler working all the time. He’d done that a few times since Morgan had known her. Adler, in Morgan’s opinion, really did do her best to balance everything. She tried to leave the office by six at the latest. Morgan knew that because she usually texted her that she was finally heading home for the day. She usually had one night a week that she reserved for Brad. Sometimes, he was too busy, and he had to cancel. It wasn’t perfect, but it was Addie. This was the life she wanted for herself.

“What happened?” Morgan asked as she stood, moved to the bathroom, and grabbed her toiletry bag.

“We broke up.”

Morgan stopped immediately. Her eyes were on the floor. In that moment, something changed within her. It wasn’t something good, either. Adler Williams was single. Brad was out of the picture. Morgan could ask her out. No, she couldn’t. Adler was single, but she was also straight. Morgan swallowed hard, tossed her zipped toiletry bag onto her bed, and walked to the dresser to remove the rest of the clothes she’d need for her weekend.

“I’m sorry, Addie.”

“You should be. It’s all your fault,” Adler replied, but she was laughing.

“What’s that mean?” Morgan laughed back, hiding her concern.

“He was jealous of you.”

Morgan flopped onto the bed again and asked, “Me? Why?” She gulped, lowered the phone for a moment, and put it back to her ear.

“I spend too much time talking to you and not enough of my time with him; which I understand. I know why it made him upset, I do. I just didn’t know how to solve the problem.”

“Probably talk to me less,” Morgan replied and promptly squished her eyes together while she shook her head.

“I don’t want to do that,” Adler said softly. “I think it came down to something that says a lot about my relationship with him. The little time I have leftover for people in my life, I didn’t want him to fill it. I know that’s bad. He’s–” Adler stopped herself.
